Life University English Professor Wins International Award for Screenplay

LifeUniversity_Brandmark[4]Though Life University (LIFE) is primarily associated with the health sciences, its core undergraduate curriculum contains traditional communication and humanities courses you’d see at a liberal arts college. Dr. Michael Montgomery, English professor at LIFE, is one of the hidden artistic gems at the University, having taught at the institution for more than 19 years in the Natural Sciences and General Education Department.

An avid writer, Dr. Montgomery has published several books, ranging from fiction and poetry collections to film criticism. But recently, it was one of his scripts, titled “Neema and Sid Go Totally Off Grid,” which was named Best Original Feature Screenplay at the Back in the Box Competition in Los Angeles. The international competition is sponsored by Fernleif Productions. All Back in the Box screenplay winners can be seen here.

“‘Neema and Sid’ is sort of a ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ for Millennials,” says Dr. Montgomery, “but the characters also have their serious side. Sid is kind of a Juno MacGuff, and Neema has the social conscience of a Malala Yousafzai.”

The win at Back in the Box was not the only first-place finish last year for Dr. Montgomery. His feature script “The Chaos Makers” won the medal for Best Screenplay – Sci Fi at Fandom Fest Comic-Con in Louisville, one of the largest science fiction gatherings in the U.S. He has since turned “The Chaos Makers” into a series which he hopes one day can make it on the small or big screen.

LIFE is proud of Dr. Montgomery and the recognition he has received for his creative endeavors.
