Cobb EMC’s sixth annual Literacy Week placed focus on students’ creativity and life-long reading and writing habits. Books came to life for nearly 20,000 students across 34 schools during the weeklong celebration.
The program, which was held the week of October 26, brought together 10 children’s book authors and students beyond the electric cooperative’s five-county metro Atlanta service areas. Cobb EMC’s Literacy Week has reached more than 60,000 students since its inception six years ago.
“Literacy Week inspires imaginations and encourages a love for reading and writing. All of the school presentations emphasize that literacy is a foundation for education,” said Mark Justice, director of education and community relations of Cobb EMC.
Guest authors included New York Times bestselling author Brian Lies, national author Robyn Hood Black and Gail Karwoski, and local authors, Jenny L. Cote, Diane Shore, Danny Schnitzlein, Kim Hardy, Terri Whitmire, Michael White and Dr. Kotina Hall.
State School Superintendent Richard Woods also participated in Literacy Week. He visited LaBelle Elementary, and Boston Elementary and shared his goal to improve outcomes and expand options for Georgia’s public K-12 students.
“I came to look at what wonderful things are taking place, because it is something that, as I go out and meet with individuals, it allows me to share the many great things that are going on across the state,” Woods said. “It is also a way for me to hear from our teachers, administrators, parents and students about what is going on in school to make sure that we are doing the right thing and how we can improve our education system in Georgia so that we can ensure that each and every student has the ability to succeed and receive the best education possible.”
Both Cobb EMC and Gas South support the educational systems through contributions to local organizations and schools.
