The College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University is slated to offer its Fundamentals of Residential Property Management Program on Friday, April 16. The certificate-based program, which qualifies for VA Education Benefits, is taught by some of the state’s top real estate and property management professionals and is approved by the Georgia Real Estate Commission.

In this eight-week certificate program, “students are not only learning theory, they are learning how to apply it and what it looks like in real life,” said Deborah Westphal, instructor and executive director of the Institute of Real Estate Management (GA Chapter #67). “Organizations like IREM, National Apartment Association and Georgia Apartment Industry Education Foundation are promoting careers in our industry as a way to attract more qualified individuals into real estate.”

The format of the class is highly interactive. Students will participate in practice situations, discussions and case study analyses. At the end of the program, students will have an understanding of the fundamentals of property management with a focus on the site operations and leasing.hand over of house keys

“There’s a lot of information and very good teachers. All the instructors are top-notch” said Verlez Turner, graduate. “I’m in real estate and I felt like I knew a lot about real estate. I felt I was really going to know this class and thought it may even be a little boring to me, but it is completely different. In some aspects, yes, it is real estate, but the way the class is structured it teaches you the proper ways of doing things.”

The topics discussed throughout the class include apartment marketing and leasing, fair housing laws, risk management, customer service responsibilities, financial reporting, ethics and compliance as well as the various career opportunities in the field.

“The future is looking brighter for the real estate industry, and training students to be prepared for this influx of business opportunities will be a top priority for the class,” Westphal said.

The instructors, members of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and the Georgia Real Estate Commission, were most recently presented the Exemplary Service Contribution Award at the 2016 Georgia Adult Education Association Annual Conference for providing hands-on learning and networking opportunities for students in the program.
