Annual art arrival ads to Powder Springs’ Downtown Visuals

Cobb-based M2R Fence Gallery scheduled to be on display through Nov. 26

Art has come to Thurman Springs Park with the annual arrival of the M2R Fence Gallery, adding to a number of creative visuals already across Powder Springs’ downtown.

The 2022-2023 M2R Fence Gallery traveling exhibit premiered in downtown Marietta in early May as part of the M2R Trailfest. Following the 60-day exhibition there, it began traveling throughout Cobb County.

Through Nov. 26, residents and visitors to Powder Springs can view more than 100 temporary art panels from the exhibit along fencing within and around Thurman Springs Park and down Oakview Drive between Pineview Drive and Jackson Way Extension. This is the third-straight autumn the park has hosted the exhibit.

The exhibit’s latest stop at Powder Springs is its last of the year, with a break for the winter season scheduled through Feb. 10 and opening the next day at Aviation Park in Kennesaw/Town Center CID.

Powder Springs welcomes the traveling art installation, though its downtown has already had its share of art installed both in recent weeks and last year. Along the construction fences on Marietta Street and Lewis Road are a dozen city-installed artworks that show the sights and highlights of the great city. The historic Boyd Building downtown, meanwhile, recently became the home of Shadowbox at the Springs, a vignette art venue within the building’s front windows facing Marietta Street. This installation is thanks to the South Cobb Arts Alliance, whose home office is just a few yards away in Powder Springs Park.

Downtown’s “Welcome to Powder Springs” mural was unveiled late last year and is the work of John W. Christian. Located on the side of Sweet Southern Coffee and Dessert on Marietta Street, the mural was the artist’s 50th piece as part of the Georgia Mural Trail, which Christian originated.

The combined talents of artist Gerald Byrd and Liz Williams of downtown’s Liz by Design Photography led to the creation of the “Be Kind” mural located in the paseo between Hand-Me-Up’s Consignment and Suga’s Cheese Shoppe & Cafe. The mural was created by Byrd and inspired by a photo shoot Williams in 2020 that featured children of various ages showing love and compassion to one another. A ribbon cutting for the mural was held in September 2021.
