The first class to complete the new Certificate in Nonprofit Board Governance training series received their certificates from BoardSource Certified Governance Trainer Glenda Y. Hicks, CPA. “The purpose of the eight-hour program; which is a collaborative commitment of the Cobb Community Collaborative, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Cobb Community Foundation and my firm is to develop a pipeline of formally trained individuals to serve on the boards of directors of nonprofit organizations which serve clients in Cobb County.” Hicks said.
Often the same people, who already serve on nonprofit boards, roll off to other nonprofit board service or are continuously sought by other nonprofits. “Promoting this Certificate in Nonprofit Board Governance to the Cobb Chamber’s members gives companies the opportunity to have their employees receive formal nonprofit board governance training. In turn those employees can provide more effective nonprofit board member service, and help create more community impact for their companies and the nonprofit agencies,” said Sharon Mason, Chief Operating Officer of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.
The reality is “In my experience, many nonprofit board members do not know what their basic responsibilities are when they join a board, and often they are not adequately trained or oriented by the nonprofit organizations” added Hicks. This eight-hour training series helps current and prospective board members understand their basic roles and responsibilities, expectations of being a board member, understanding nonprofit financial and fundraising responsibilities and much more.
Karen Carter, Executive Director of the Cobb Community Collaborative, said “Those who receive a Certificate in Nonprofit Board Governance will be added to a database at our office. As a Cobb Collaborative member benefit, member nonprofit agencies who are seeking interested and formally trained individuals to serve on their boards of directors will have access to these graduates as formally trained prospective board members.”
