Harriet Tubman Day is a nationally celebrated holiday to honor the legacy of America’s greatest hero and will be recognized on a National Zoom call hosted by her closest descendents, Great, Great, Great, Grand Niece Rita Daniels and, Great, Great, Grand Niece Pauline Copes – Johnson, 93 Years Old of Auburn New York.
Connecticut resident Wayne Winston, a HTLC National Board Member for Harriet Tubman Learning Center will be hosting the event with United States Senator Richard Blumenthal, and United States Congressman participating in the national call. The event is part of the annual fundraiser for the Harriet Tubman Learning Center 501 C3 which targets at risk youth with STEM, robotics, and leadership development based programs with a goal to influence confidence, a positive mindset towards education and future goals.
The online event is set to feature keynote speaker Pauline Copes-Johnson, the great-great grandniece of Tubman and her oldest living descendant at 93 years of age. Powder Springs Mayor Al Thurman is set to take part in the event along with several others, including two members of Congress: U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.).
The non-profit Harriet Tubman Learning Center, according to its website (https://www.harriettubmanlearningcenter.org/) was established in February of 2015 by President & Founder Rita Daniels along with Board Member Geraldine Copes-Daniels. Rita Daniels, who is local to Cobb County, is the great-great-great grandniece of Tubman. There is more information on Rita on the Center website.
