Dr. Mark Kovacs, the Director of the LIFE Sport Science Institute (LSSI) and Associate Professor in the Department of Sport Health Science at Life University (LIFE) was an invited presenter at the prestigious International Olympic Committee World Conference on the Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport hosted by Prince Albert of Monaco at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo, Monaco (March 16-18, 2017). This is the top worldwide sports medicine conference held once every three years and includes the top researchers and clinicians that work with Olympic athletes.
“It was a real honor and privilege to present two separate lectures at this unique conference that brings together the top minds working in Olympic sport,” says Dr. Kovacs. “I was very grateful for the opportunity to present some of our latest work that we are conducting alongside Emory Medical Center, as well as some of my research with tennis athletes.”
The IOC Medical Commission organizes the conference that brings together the leading individuals in the Olympic movement from more than 50 countries. Dr. Kovacs had the opportunity to learn and share information with individuals from the leading sports federations and Olympic Committees from dozens of sporting nations. Some of the information he presented is from two unique graduate classes he teaches at Life University titled “Technology in Sport” and “Recovery in Sport,” which provides students with the latest information about technologies and recovery research to help improve sport performance and the reduction of overuse injuries.
“The ability to share our latest work is one aspect of the conference, but an even greater privilege is to be able to bring back to the LIFE campus the latest information in these areas, while building upon the applied research and education we are performing at the LSSI. We can also add to the curriculum that is being taught to the students that we mentor here in the undergraduate and graduate programs in Sport Health Science,” remarks Dr. Kovacs. “The connections through the Olympic movement also provide great contacts for students who may have an interest in working in Olympic sports in different areas of performance and injury prevention.”
