Nonprofit Nobis Works is celebrating 40 years of changing lives for people
with disabilities through job training, employment, and vocational support.
Nobis Works, formerly known as the Tommy Nobis Center, is celebrating 40 years of helping individuals with all types of disabilities to enter or return to the workforce. By providing job training and vocational support, the Marietta-based nonprofit has improved the lives of more than 25,000 individuals and their families.
In 1977, a group of Atlanta parents and teachers teamed up with Atlanta Falcons All-Pro linebacker Tommy Nobis to address the lack of employment opportunities available for people with disabilities after high school. Nobis had recently retired from a successful career in the National Football League as a five-time All Pro linebacker with the Atlanta Falcons. With the mission of “Empowering People Through Employment,” Nobis Works helps individuals enjoy productive and independent lives while contributing to the greater business community.
In the past 40 years, Nobis Works has built a tradition of excellence within the community and beyond by employing individuals in 18 states across the country, from Georgia to Alaska.
“We are humbled to have been able to support people with disabilities in such a profound way for such a long time,” President and CEO Dave Ward says. “Creating a lasting legacy of inclusion, support, and community is what Nobis Works strives to establish for each of our program participants and their families.”
Nobis Works utilizes community-based partnerships to create inclusive environments where individuals gain work experience and participate in focused hands-on training and job coaching. Partnering community employers include WellStar, Owens & Minor, Kroger, and Asbury Automotive Group.
To celebrate four decades of changing lives, Nobis Works is hosting the Galaxy of Stars luncheon on Friday, April 28th at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center. This is an annual event—made even more special by this exciting milestone—where the community gathers to celebrate the accomplishments of people with disabilities in the workplace, and to recognize the impact of Nobis Works’ programs and partnerships.
