The College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University awarded 25 students with scholarships to help defray some of the costs associated with specific programs. Continuing Education Dean Barbara Calhoun said donors and friends made the awards possible.
“Through their generosity our students are offered an opportunity to pursue their educational endeavors,” Calhoun said.
The Jeanne A. Cook Memorial Scholarship – Donated by East Cobb YMCA Kickers Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County – afforded Antonay Davis the opportunity to enroll in the Gerontology Certificate program.
“The gerontology program will enable me to learn how to improve the quality of life for senior populations in our society,” Davis said. “Earning [this] certificate will give me the ability to enhance my leadership skills in the area of aging field, providing solutions to emerging roles and [the] new challenges in the aging arena.”
Human Resources professional Vernessa Britt was awarded the Barbara S. Calhoun Scholarship. Britt said human resources roles have changed dramatically in recent years. By obtaining the Human Resources SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certificate and credentials, Britt hopes to become better prepared to support her business partners and the employees she oversees.
“This certificate will demonstrate to my peers and colleagues, within the HR profession, that I am a recognized expert in the field and have mastered the core HR principles,” Britt said. “I am willing to put the extra effort to become certified.”
After graduating with her Paralegal certificate, Patricia Neal has held several roles in the legal field. When she received a catalog in the mail and read the cover story on another graduate, she was encouraged to pursue the Administrative Office Management certificate program. Neal received the Barbara S. Calhoun Scholarship for this program.
“[This] program [allows] me to bridge the gap between my paralegal experience by gaining more knowledge that is so crucial in today’s world of technology,” Neal said. “I have the drive and determination to complete this program and to use the knowledge gained to encourage others who may feel like they have no options and hope of improving. This education [is] for a greater purpose than myself.”
