Alexa DeStefano steps down as Executive Director; Board Names Ashleyanne Hensley as Interim Executive Director

Following a successful run of The Nutcracker, The Georgia Ballet announces that Executive Director Alexa Destefano has concluded her tenure after 12 years of service. The Georgia Ballet Board of Trustees has named Ashleyanne Hensley, current Director of The School of The Georgia Ballet, as Interim Executive Director, effective Jan. 1, 2026.
Founded in 1960 by Marietta native Iris Hensley, The Georgia Ballet is celebrating its 65th anniversary this season and recently completed a highly successful run of The Nutcracker at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, highlighted by two sold-out performances and ticket sales that grew by more than 60% over the previous year.
“My 12 years with The Georgia Ballet have been truly life-changing,” says outgoing Executive Director, Alexa DeStefano. “I’ve had the rare privilege of growing with an organization I love—from performing on stage to serving in leadership—and of helping guide its evolution along the way. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I have complete confidence in Ashleyanne’s leadership and look forward to watching The Georgia Ballet continue to thrive in the years ahead.”
Hensley’s history with The Georgia Ballet spans nearly 20 years, beginning as a professional dancer. During her years on stage, she developed the discipline, focus, and perseverance that defines ballet and continues to shape her leadership approach. Her transition from dancer to leadership was both natural and intentional. Hensley has served the organization in numerous roles, including administrative assistant, teacher, school director, costumer and seamstress, and competition director. She also designed and launched the school’s Conservatory Program, now a cornerstone of The Georgia Ballet’s training model.
As school director, Hensley strengthened curriculum, elevated technical standards, expanded performance and competition opportunities, and built strong relationships with students, families, faculty, and donors. Known for her strategic thinking, steady communication, and values-driven leadership, she brings a blend of artistic vision and operational clarity to her role as executive director.
“I am committed to honoring The Georgia Ballet’s rich artistic legacy while boldly expanding our reach, impact, and vision,” says Hensley. “We are entering a new chapter defined by transparency, collaboration, and deep community connection. Through innovation, expanded access, and audience growth, my focus is on empowering our dancers and artists, growing our school, and ensuring The Georgia Ballet continues to evolve as a vibrant cultural home—accessible, inspiring, and sustainable for generations to come.”
“Ashleyanne brings deep institutional knowledge and proven leadership to the role. She’s the right person to guide The Georgia Ballet through this transition,” said Chris Harrison, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “We’re grateful for Alexa’s years of dedication and confident the organization will continue to thrive under Ashleyanne’s leadership as Interim Executive Director.”
Hensley has already begun planning the 2026-2027 season with Georgia Ballet Artistic Director Daet Rodriguez, who has embraced the leadership change.
“I am deeply grateful for Alexa’s meaningful contributions to The Georgia Ballet,” says Rodriguez. “Her dedication and leadership have meant a great deal to our organization, and we are thankful for everything she accomplished during her time with us. Ashleyanne brings a deep understanding of our organization, our artists, and our mission, and I am confident in her ability to guide us through this transition. The Georgia Ballet remains strong and focused, and I look forward to working closely with her as we move forward.”
The Georgia Ballet’s 65th Anniversary season continues with The Wizard of Oz, a fresh take on a beloved story, full of heart, adventure, and ballet magic for all ages, March 6-8, 2026, at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, located on the campus of Kennesaw State University. Tickets can be purchased online at GeorgiaBallet.org/WizardofOztickets or by calling 770-528-0881 from 9am to 5pm weekdays.
