Just in time for fall, Georgia Metropolitan Dance Theatre’s (GMDT) opening production for the 2023/24 season is about to hit the stage. Hauntingly beautiful and dramatically spooky, Giselle is a ghost-filled story of innocent love, devastating betrayal, and forgiveness beyond the grave.
Giselle is a masterpiece of the romantic era, first premiered in 1841, portraying themes of beauty, tragedy, and ghostly vengeance. Theatre-goers will be on the edge of their seats asking the timeless question – is the power of unconditional love enough to overcome revenge? GMDT’s production will feature professional dancers performing alongside their highest-level company dancers.
Dates: Friday, October 6 at 7:30PM; Saturday, October 7 at 7:30PM; and Sunday, October 8 at 2:00PM
Location: The KSU Dance Theatre (Marietta Campus)
Tickets: Tickets start at $30 and are available through georgiametrodance.org
“Giselle is one of the master works of classical ballet that I wanted my company dancers to be exposed to,” said Ashleigh Whitworth, artistic director for GMDT. “It requires a lot from the dancers, both strength and finesse in the romantic style ballet technique, as well as total commitment and deep understanding of the acting and dramatic elements. The roles of Giselle and Myrtha are the two most challenging parts in the ballet for females, and I am so proud that two of my student dancers will be performing in these roles. One of the true highlights of Giselle is the corps de ballet in Act II, where 26 dancers have to work together to perform as one “body.” I have seen my dancers work harder than they ever have in order to rise to the occasion of this master work, and I cannot wait to see them on stage.”
GMDT is comprised of more than 120 students ranging in age from seven years-old to graduating high school seniors who train at Georgia Dance Conservatory (GDC) on the Marietta Square. The GMDT 2023/24 season will also include The Nutcracker, traditionally presented the weekend after Thanksgiving, this year on November 24-26. Next spring, GMDT’s Peter Pan will return to the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre March 22-24, 2024. More information about these productions is available at georgiametrodance.org.
